Internships
Energen provides a paid internship for one student during spring, summer and fall semesters. Fostered by the communications department, the internship usually consists of a 15-week program, where the student is provided with hands-on experience in the various fields of corporate journalism, photography, special projects, media relations and web technology. The intern will learn how all of these elements exist within the corporate world and will employ concepts the student learned in communication course work. This internship opportunity will also assist in providing further supervised training in agreed-upon communication areas.
The intern must be capable of working in a professional environment and be willing to learn quickly. Interns will be expected to contribute to all areas of the communications department and work independently throughout the company. Interns will write news and feature stories for an audience of 1,500 employees in electronic and print publications, help plan and shoot photographs for various internal and external communications projects and research and write content for the corporate Web sites.
Responsibilities will also include a wide variety of special projects that require writing, research, planning, organization and attention to detail.
Students who are completing their junior or senior year and are majoring in mass communications, journalism or public relations are eligible to apply. Students who are taking classes and completing their internship simultaneously may apply. Candidates are evaluated on their knowledge of journalism and public relations. Students must have housing and transportation. Close family members of active Alagasco, Energen, or Energen Resources Corporation employees will not be considered.
Energen Plaza is located in downtown Birmingham.
Energen will complete the necessary paperwork for interns to receive academic credit.

“As an Energen intern, I was given the opportunity to apply the skills I had learned in the classroom; I was not there to fetch coffee or make copies. My supervisors in the Communications Department were more than willing to let me work on major projects and gain hands-on experience. I walked away from my internship at Energen with an impressive and diverse portfolio, invaluable experience and a better understanding of corporate communications.” Meg W. – University of Alabama, 2009
“My internship at Energen allowed me to work with some great, knowledgeable people and was key in preparing me for life after college. The skills I obtained while interning for Energen have served me well in the professional world, and the portfolio I generated during the internship played a major role in helping me obtain a job before I graduated college.” Neal W. – Auburn University, 2007
